I posted this to find out what y'all watch out there.

Too many to think of, this is one category where I don't have a specific favorite. Among action movies, my favorite are The Rock and Bad Boys. Drama is almost certainly American Beauty, awesome movie. Arlington Road is one of the most underrated movies ever. Requiem for a Dream is about the best independent movie ever made. Though it's not technically a movie, it's a miniseries, Band of Brothers. I consider it a 10-hour movie. Apollo 13 comes to mind. Dragonheart is another underrated movie. I'm not a huge fan of comedy movies, I get my fill of that from Comedy Central, That 70's Show, and Loveline. But of course the Austin Powers movies are hilarious, as is There's Something About Mary. Wayne's World! (party time, excellent!) Anyway, I can't think of stuff... my favorite recent movie is 8 Mile. And hey, read a book... Catch-22 is great, funny and so many ludicrous situations, it's like an Abbott and Costello routine every few paragraphs. The Stranger by Albert Camus... so far my favorite book, but you have to read it and understand the implicit as well as the explicit parts, don't just read it and think "This guy is weird...." Hmm... this thread was supposed to be about movies....

I love movies, some people may think I watch too many of them, but I don't, movies make me feel great. I did like Snatch a lot, and Trainspotting was good, that mean guy was good but it was hard to understand those wankers. I agree with g-bay, Arlington Road is pretty good, but the movie I really liked recently was The Mothman Prophecies. Possibly the most overrated film was Signs, it was good, but not amazing like it was suppose to be.

Categorically, here are my favorites...

my favorite All Around Cool movie is Boogie Nights Mark Walberg is terrific in this. The firecracker scene is amazing *singing* You know I wish that I had Jesse's girl! B)<>

Ok, I didn't notice Cloud's post until just now... got a few things to pick out of that...
1. Since when is Dogma a drama? It was a comedy.
2. LOTR III is obviously not out yet. At the very least put your (will be) in it.
3. Harry Potter?????
4. I have no idea why you included Braveheart in your Sci-fi/Fantasy list... you see any hobbits in it? It's based on a real man (a man that I am related to, actually) and a real Scottish rebellion. Did you even see it???
5. Signs sucked ass. There are so many holes in it....
6. MiB II wasn't very good either....
7. I saw Dreamcatcher... has some of my favorite actors (Morgan Freeman, Damian Lewis, Jason Lee, and Tom Sizemore), but it was really bad. The screenplay was so poorly written, and though there were some intriguing or entertaining parts, the bad stuff vastly outweighs the good. Four childhood friends, facing something evil, something related to their past... sound familiar to another Stephen King plot?

There is one movie that I don't really know how to class and thats the movie Wild Things. Now before anyone says I just like the movie because of the 2 ladies make out together well its more then that. There are so many plot twists in that movie that it kept me guessing right till the very end. If you haven't seen the movie I suggest you go watch it. Any make sure you watch the credits at the end. A friend of mine didn't watch the credits and he found the movie confusing, soon as he watched the ending thou he was as amazed as I was.

I watch The Ring on Friday and it freaked me out pretty good, it's the best horror movie I've seen in years. I live alone and was tripping myself out after the movie thinking about Samara the little girl. Not the kind of movie you'd want to get stoned or trip on acid while watching it. Losts of disturbing visuals, very creepy music, eerie sounds. Don't watch it alone or with little kids...I guess the sequel is coming out next year.

Damn I'm getting the creeps thinking about it again :/

Bleh, I don't like horror movies... simply because they don't scare me at all. I did jump a couple of times, notably when they flash the dead girl's face. Ah yes... Wild Things... they don't really make out, there's a threesome scene between Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, and Denise Richards that they show the beginning of, and the girls kiss for a few seconds....

Its still making out in my books. :P Over all the movie was very wicked. It was basically the first movie that had to totally confused at tthe end. :D

Horror
All the Freddy movies, Jason movies, the Alien series (while not actually horror they are a mixture of horror and sci-fi and I just get sucked into them everytime.

I'm not actually scared of these movies, I usually end up laughing most of the time (well for Aliens I usually going "whoa, that was cool") :D

Bad Japanese dubs
All the godzilla movies, Ultra man (seen this about 15 years ago) and thats all of them that I can remember seeing.

They don't scare me either. Why does everyone think it was so scary? Sure, it had disturbing pictures, but that's all. It was about as suspenceful as watching a chicken lay an egg. Everytime I felt like I *might* be gettting scared, they'd start some poppy music and switch to a happy scene of her in the office printing a picture or her boss telling her she's fired. All movies make that mistake. They ruin the mood with these modernized scenes that don't fit with set-in-stone genres. It's like making it so that in order to score a goal in NHL 2003 you have to solve a puzzle straight out of Monkey Island.

...Sorry a bit of a rant there but I don't like many movies anymore, the ending espically, always disappoints. Don't know if I'm too critical, or if Hollywood just outright sucks.

I think you guys are just desensitized to Horror films in general, by watching too many of them and just by general media. I mean you can watch the TV and see scarier stuff on the news than you can by watching a horror movie. With Horror films, you have to use your imagination, fantasize a little, don't look at them in a cynical sense, otherwise you'll ruin it for yourself.

Actually I think I'm desensitized because I've gone through a scarier incident than just seeing some cinema stuff. First off, ride a rollercoaster, that's a hell of a lot scarier. Even that I ridden too many, I'm mostly desensitized, I've held conversations with a friend on Viper (rollercoaster with the most inversions). Guess that's what happens when you live 20 mins from the biggest and best coaster park in the world.
Somehow movies fail to induce fear. Not sure why, you say you have to have an imagination, but you see that can work against you, seeing as I could come up with scarier stuff in my own head, so when I see it on screen, I'm just like "bleh." There's just nothing that's convincing. And it's not media... not much has ever scared me.

I'm asuming you were talking about The Ring, and not the disturbing pictures of matt dillon, neve campbell, and denise richrads...

Movies - Wha? - 04-01-2003

Horror is the hardest genre to create, beacause it's not scary to watch somebody fearing for their life, no matter how scared they are. About the only thing that gets people is suspense, and you cant make that your whole movie. I for one loved The Ring for it's beatiful, creepy imagery. At least it wasn't relying on being scary to be good. I played and beat American McGee's Alice for the third time within a week of seeing it because it had given me a craving for more dark, sureal imagery. As far as horror goes, it wasn't all that scary. It does get points for being creepy though.

I hope they come up with a way to involve the audience more without making it cheesy.
