Didn't have any virus on this comp for years now. Just don't open any .exe or .scr or other files with strange extensions you get from mails. Also scan every file you download, then everything should be fine.

Then don't let friends have access to your computer unless you are there with them.
Searching the internet generally should not give you viruses unless you are visiting places you shouldn't be.

Oh, and warez is to be avoided if you don't want a big ole virus - them sites are designed to send you in circles picking up viruses on the way. lol.
