There is a lawsuit about that very cartoon. Which if the suit is successfull it would set a precident and could change a lot of first ammendment stuff.

You need a reason, otherwise how do you make the case in court? I wouldn't want my lawyer saying "Uh yeah, I can't really put this into words.. Can't you just award my client lots of money?".

The lawsuit is from the Woody Guthrie estate...the creators of the piece do not have permission to use the song...the old copyright thing

I heard there was a similar suit from roy orboson, because someone used pretty woman. I cant remember the outcome. You do actually need a reason, buy my point was it didnt have to be very good.

Parodies and references shouldn't need permission if credit is given, since they usually require knowledge of the original work to make sense.
