Give it a shot...I think it is possible but I believe it will be very involved. It looks like they tried to write that way in player.cpp but the code in pm_shared.c is taking precedence. I found the tricky part was getting the global variables to update during map change...to make it update when a person gets near an 'object' will be trickier.
