Firstly, to answer the above quote, I had that with my graphics card and I think DirectX, try switching to 640x480 on OpenGL or DirectX, and then try the other... if they aren't working, see fi you can get an updated graphics card.

Secondly, with regards to Slow-Mo, etc... Once you become accustomed to them, even when they occur you can dodge around, and sometimes beat the guy who tried to use it against you... I actually prefer Slow Pause to Slow Motion (only thing is that Slow Pause only comes in 3 second not 5 second packages).
