An exploit is a vulnerability or "security hole" which allows an attacker to compromise your system.
A good example would be the one from irc. A link was posted, a couple people visited it using IE and the page contained an IE exploit which caused a file to be downloaded that gets started everytime window does, then automatically caused the victim to post the same url, and finally it shut everyone's pc down so that the downloaded file can execute on startup. Oh and this was only in a few seconds.
