Depends on what you mean by love... I always take a psychology standpoint. It could very well be just an extremely strong emotion for a living thing... that's probably like platonic love, familial love, that kind of thing. Then there is the love for a partner, which is basically the strong feelings of companionship along with sexual desire. Perhaps that means you can love many many people. I don't like any of the metaphysical standpoints, like "love at first site." I just think it's a feeling, infatuation could be described as love. A friend and a lover, that's probably the closest definition of love.
Personally, I don't think you know if you're in love with someone until you're old and still with that person. Say you're deeply infatuated with someone, you feel it is love, and the situation deems marriage. You don't cheat, you don't disrespect your partner, and you stay together for the rest of your lives. That's the mark of "true" love.
I don't like how the word is tossed around. I don't see myself saying it to a girl anytime soon on my own... now, I may say it if she says it to keep from hurting her feelings, or whatever. It doesn't really matter.
Love means different things to different people... to me, I think the FEELING is common, we can feel it with many people. To say that it is true love... perhaps that's rare. *Shrug*
