More Steam Installers Tomorrow
#1
Below is what I found on the http://www.steampowered.com and http://www.planethalflife.com this morning. Its great to wake up and get a good laugh. BTW they have a couple of understatements of the decade in this post.

Quote:Well, the release process last week and over the weekend was pretty rocky. The community managed to get 500,000 accounts created and are currently seeing about 15,000 people playing Counter-Strike 1.6 at any given time. We know that the conversion process has been anything but smooth for many of our users. We're going to get this fixed. We've done our best to support the Half-Life community over the past 5 years, and we're still committed to doing whatever it takes to make the community happy. We've listened to the response, and we'll be repairing the problems with Steam until it performs the way we all want it to.

Tomorrow we will release new installers which include the cache files for all of the games available via Steam (Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, the dedicated server, etc). If you haven't already done so, please use the installer that includes Counter-Strike and Half-Life.

Here's what's going on at Steam HQ:

We ran into some pretty serious bandwidth and server limitations after the release last week, which has caused several other problems like long wait times and UI unresponsiveness. The load is starting to die down now and we're getting more content servers lined up, so these problems are becoming less frequent. As more people begin using the new installers which include the game caches, their experience using Steam will improve greatly. If you're having problems connecting to Steam or launching Counter-Strike, please download the latest version of the installer and give it a try.
Some other Steam problems -- "JIT" error messages, expired ticket errors, etc -- will be fixed with a Steam update this week.
Other stuff:

Counter-Strike 1.5 is still available, and will be for a couple of weeks. After we're confident that the Steam authentication servers are functioning as they should (and not before), we'll be turning off the WON servers and migrating everyone over to the new system.
There have been some reports of the Conversion Wizard failing during account creation. If this happens for you, please try downloading and installing the most recent version of the Steam client from one of the mirrors listed on this site.
We're preparing a new installer on CD for cyber-cafe owners. Contact [email protected] if you're interested in receiving this.
We've heard from several people who are having trouble getting their MODs working with Steam. We've updated our FAQ with new information about this. Check it out and then email us if you're still having trouble.

Feel free to get in touch with us you're having difficulty, or for whatever reason. Thanks for hanging in there with us through these first few days.

Ok so are we gonna take bets on if it will actually be released tomorrow? LOL

Hmm... does this sound like a GIGANTIC beta testing phase we just went through?!

Isn't that like illegal or sommat though, because we didn't sign up for beta testing... dang it was free though :/

i saw its on time, but will probaly take 24 hours to dl anyway, considering the huge demand placed on them.

Well its not illegal because they are not charging any money for it. If they were charging us 10 bucks a month just to use steam then yes it would be illegal.

Once they take the won servers down and if steam is still isn't working and blocks us from playing a game we paid for, then it could be considered illegal but I doubt it would hold up in any court. I think they would just turn around and say, look at the bright side, you got 5 years out of it when most games don't last that long.

what do you mean most games don't last that long???? Sure they do, they just get updated to suit new graphics. People are still playing Pong, the first video game EVER. Just cause they up the graphics, maybe put in a new mode of play or two, its still pong. anyways, thats what you could argue back to them.

well installed my steam, and it appears to be working, but the gameplay of rico is diffrent, will that be fixed when these installers are out tommorow? cuz it better.

I don't believe that it will.. but your right... it's funny how we as long time players can *feel* that difference, but your new players would wonder what we are talking about.

All they changed the first time around was added more player colours and "multiserve technology". They did remove the handy feature that let you spawn faster by pressing a key.

I don't think they realize how bad a state ricochet really is. I can tell they did virtually no play testing, and obviously had poor foresight... though that seems par for the course.

Surely we should be able to get our fixes sent through to valve for an update... especially if everyone's switching to the new STEAM technology... Anyone know where these full versions are available for download, I can't be arsed looking...

from a programing standpoint, i would look at the jumps, as soon as i hit one, i noticed a delay, (like i was on a laggy server), i moved forward and teleported back, sorta thing, and the "hitboxes" (lack of a better word) of the jumps seemed bigger, lastly the air accleration command (what allows you to turn in the air) seemed slower (forgot what that command is). But if someone could look into that, ASAP, while we have all the backed up hl files still around, and won servers still around to test the old gameplay, that would be great.

the problem is, it's in the newer version of Ricochet which they have changed slightly but not released an SDK for. I experience that also.. though I'm not sure if it's more noticable if you have a higher ping...

i was playing on a server (forget which one) and i was pinging high 40's to low 60's and i didnt notice the jumping thing as much. Could the steam servers being flooded right now have something to do with it? it seems like its lag conditions right now, possible theory.

It's a posibility...but it doesn't explain the 10 minute wait when you walk through a door on a single player game :/

Speaking of Steam Installers, I am 30% through downloading the FULL installer... If someone wants it from me when I'm not using the machine, let me know...
