hl mod reviews
#1
first off, i'm not really keen on mods too much because no mater what mod i play, it still feels like half-life so i can't fool myself entirely into believing it's a different game (rico is an obvious exception). however, they are free and some actually surprised me...hey i got to do something while i wait for hl2 and tron2.0. i downloaded a few and here they are:

vampire slayer - not bad but it feels incomplete. probably cause you don't have many options or player models and it's not mission orientated. kill every1 on the other team and you win basically. very "moddy" feel to it. i'll play it again sometime though...it can be quick fun as rounds don't usually take more than 5 minutes.

7/10 ...not bad...worth the dl

natural selection - wow! this game rox. it doesn't even feel like a mod. very spooky atmosphere and huge beautiful "aliens" inspired maps. strategy based where you play as marine or an alien. i really like the fact that as an alien, you can evolve into bigger nastier aliens. definantly not quick fun though...it's strategy based and rounds can take a very long time to complete...prepare to think. valve can sell this in retail packages like cs and dod and make some dough...seriously.

10/10 ...gorgeous job...they really worked hard on this and it shows...:thumb:

snow-war - the problem: there are 5 good servers and no-one to play with. this is a shame because i think this could be a really fun game. basically, you throw snowballs (your only weapon btw) at your opponents deathmatch style. this is a welcome change to the gore of most mods and the best part is, who cares if you suck at it? could be a nice stress reliever...i don't see any 14yr old kids screaming "f u hacker" in their mic when they get smacked w/ a snowball. actually, i don't see 14yr olds playing this game...geez, maybe i'm getting to the age where guns and violence don't interest me...hahaha...that's funny...lol. the maps seem nice and compact...good mod for lan parties i imagine.

X/10 ...not rated...i need some peeps to play with but looks like a riot...

pirates, vikings and knights - this game was a hoot!..seriously...it's hard to describe but i will try. basically there are three teams (guess what they are) and you choose a class of warrior from that team. some maps are objective oriented, others aren't but who cares? this is just a blast to play. the gameplay is hysterical, the maps are loony and the people are their just to have a good time...no pressure and very noob friendly. some of the strangest maps i ever seen in my life. this one map pvk_collosus will seriously have you say "wtf?" aloud. it felt good to play an online game where i didn't care about winning...i never thought about my K/D ratio once...i was too busy smiling....^_^

9/10 ...may as well be a 10 actually...i'm addicted...i'm going to go play this after i finish this post...

desert crisis - i was really hessitant about downloading this one because i only need one counterstrike type game actually. i was glad i did though...very nice game w/ some neat weapons and gameplay. a couple of the maps were dark (it was nighttime so makes sense) but you can get infrared goggles. they did an excellent job on this mod...you have tons of options and weapons (most realistic, some futuristic...all cool)...you can even ride in vehicles on some maps. you choose between two teams (the u.s.a and the u.p.ko. which is sort of like the u.n.) and you fight against each other and carry out objectives (usually a chain of objectives). lemme get to the point...i like this game a bit better than counterstrike...it has a starship troopers vibe to it...but marine vs. marine and many akimbo weapons :). the gameplay was fast and tight and i plan to play again...

9/10 ...great job, awesome gameplay...counter-what? never heard of it....

grenades, snarks and teleporters - this game isn't even finished but i know (i just do okay ) it's going to be the best mod ever. as soon as it's completed, i'm going to open a dedicated server for it. the maps are gorgeous and the weapons are hilarious (the flying chicken ownz!). you can try a beta version right now...i did...they still have a long way to go on this but you can see the potential...i hope they finish it...i'll kick their asses if they don't .

X/10 ...anyone want to be in the very first gst clan w/ me?...lol...

ty wha? for that treatment of the specialists. well i downloaded another great mod...

battle grounds - great game!...and to think i didn't want to play it initially. basically, this game is set during the revolutionary war where (do i have to tell u?) there are two teams battling against each other: british and american. i really liked the big spacious maps and the guns cool. i know what your'e thinking: how can a musket compare to an awp or deagle? well, you'd be surprised...they are very fun to play with and present a new challenge as you have to reload your weapon after each shot...not to mention the relatively poor accuracy...in other words, you better like melee weapons ^_^. the problem w/ this game is the bugs i've encountered...especially at the start of a game...however, a new version (perhaps release quality) is coming out very soon...which will also have new features such as ammo boxes. i recommend this one.

8/10 ..can't ignore the glitches but consider this: battle grounds was ranked #1 on gamespy's "top 10 mods you aren't playing" list...they may just be right about that...w/ version 1.2 coming out, i'm excpecting a near flawless game. i'll definantly make more trips to the front in the future.

omg....yet more mod reviews...

existence - a mod after the matrix fan's own heart. you can read the details elsewhere...so let's get to it. i really liked the weapons...especially the dual scorpions. i didn't like the gameplay too much...particularly when you respawn as a mere mortal and all the rebels (or agents) have fun absorbing your fire then killing you with 1 shot from their beretta. all of the maps i played took place at night and i can't see too well what the hell is going on.
on the plus side, the maps are well suited for sneaking around and dodging fire... i can see where there could be some some awesome fire-fights. they did a good job in making this mod and the models are great

8/10 - if you ever thought they should make a mod based on the matrix...well they did...dl it.

earth's special forces - i love this game. it's directly based on dragon ball z and you choose among several well-made models from the show. i'm even not much into dragon_ballZ...but at least i know my goku from my piccolo. anyways, you don't have convential weapons...you have special powers that you can use provided you have enuf ki...don't forget to recharge your ki. you can fire beams out of your hand and create ki blobs to trap enemies..and plus you got the all-powerful melee rush attck w/ which you can execute combos to pummel your opponents. the effects are superb and the maps are big and gorgeous...and you can fly! and have fights in midair w/ others! even on my crummy machine, i can run this game excellently w/ a sustained ping of 200. plus there are a good selection of servers.
the only downside: pple who play this game regularly seem to like to show off their special moves to each other then actually play the game and fight each other. it's kinda sweet if u think about it...a non-violent way to enjoy a violent game...but come-on...beat each others skulls in already!

10/10 - a terrific game that is beautifully well done. so well done, u can forget it's a mod..try it...but read the manual first...

that reminds me, if anyone wants to review a mod that's already been reviewed by me, please do as more perspectives on the same thing are better. most of my reviews are based on 3-4 days testing, so if a game gets boring a month later, i won't realize that at the time of the review of course.

now note that i often give points more for quality than anything else (maps, models, how bug-free, etc)...and that often doesn't have as much of a direct bearing on replayability (which in my mind = how fun a multiplayer game is) as you may think.

for example: ricochet...i would give it probably a 7/10 rating even though it's my favorite mod...because the quality of the mod is lacking. i play it a helluva lot more than natural selection which i gave a 10/10 however.

jabba, i really don't play that many games. often, i play ricochet and one other mod in the course of a day. i get bored on sunday nights, so i find myself dl-ing mods. most of the games i reviewed i only play once in a blue moon...if even then. i even removed a couple of them off my hard-drive because space is tight right now.

usually, i play my old standbys: ricochet and hldm. the only other mods that i play frequently right now are: pvk, battle-grounds and esf
