Alias use
#1
I am curious about something. Today i was playing for about an hour, and 5 regulars were on at diffrent times and i was the only one who wasnt under an alias. I just want to know why people use them. I can understand people who rotate between a few common ones, like how reci uses R9, and net uses mepants and the one. I could see useing them during the tournament to get better idea of your opponent. I actually used "joan of arc" a few times during it. I got bugged about who i was, and just thought that it would have been easier to just go under my own name. I just want to know why.

Well, I use aliases for a couple of reasons...as an admin I want to see how players will act when they don't think an admin is around and then there is my anti-fan club of regulars who hate me (no names but they know who they are) and in some cases I use my different wonID's.

Some people play better under aliases.

i usually use an alias when i'm upset or just don't want to talk to anyone here. some people will keep annoying me by asking questions about my identity so i end up usually playing some other game somewhere where i'm basically unknown and unremarkable.

I dont really understand the talking to ppl thing. You say hey when you enter to a few ppl and then just play. I could see someone playing better under an alias but i have never noticed that. People still know the moves and the style anyway. I think evils point about monitoring the servers when they think there isnt an admin their is a good point, but if the player has moved up to regular status, you would assume they would know how to behave. Even if a player is on they i dont get along with, i just dont talk to them and try extra hard to sever their head.

I'm not sure if one of my wonid's is a fan or an antifan evil, I'll have to check, I know I'm a big fan, but I try not to meddle in my other wonid's life's.

i'm not sure i can elaborate on this. remember when pique was freaking out with the whole 'omg! stop saying hi to me when i join the server' thing. speaking for myself, i think i can understand. even just simply saying hello back is like puling teeth sometimes.

I use an Alias sometimes to see whether it's my image or my skill that beats my opponent. Always a good thing, to see what you have to improve on.

yeah I agree some peoples names alone strike fear in me and then I try to show off and wind up dying more than I really should...Thanks for the consideration Gemakk...

It's like that in DM for me... because I'm reasonably good at Arena but have the dodging skills for DM, I've usually progressed up the ranks of the score list pretty quickly, but sometimes I don't want the attention that others give ya just for your "name". I prefer not to talk to them and see how they react instead... more often than not it's "CHEAT"

Most dmers dont know the name anyway. I know what you mean gem with the name strikeing fear, i am pretty nervous during the few times i have played you. I have never known of anyone who freaked out on a greeting. Honestly it sounds like a broken telephone thing. If you really dont want to socialize, you can always just give a "hey all" and let that be the end of it. If you ask me, it just isnt good for the community. There are players who never come in under their names. The ricochet games and the recogniation of screen names was what started the community to begin with. We shouldnt forget that.

Anon, I've been on servers and cleared them out of people so many times, that people started leaving just coz I joined... just one of those things, it happens, and when it does you don't get to play so much.

Sometimes I go in just to see if people will clear off. If someone that I know is there, I'll usually come out and say who I am because I know they'll stay to play... Other times there will be someone good, and it's fun to try and recognise them from their style.:)

Honestly i dont think ppl leave just cuz they see net on dm1. I have cleared many a server to, its not uncommon for us dmers to do. But in a crowded server the ones who leave assumeing anyone leaves souly because of name recognition then it wouldnt affect the game much.

Aye, and I guess when they've stated me that I'm imagining that too :-P

The alias.....I've used a crapload.... Mostly because I was using Razor9 for 5 years, even before I had a real computer in my house (friends houses). Just got tired of it. I will generally tell a person who I am if they ask when I'm under an alias. I havent just rotated 2 like you stated anon. I have had many. Heres what I can remember.

ya know...that's the fun thing about the internet. It's nothing face to face and you can be whatever or whoever you want. Being someone else is the glory of this reality.

Thats the thing, i dont try and be another person. I dont think anyone should. The conundrum is why be alone and faceless and now nameless, we you can at least have a name, a face if you choose and be adored. The inherent fear is that you will be alienated over petty diffrences. I would want to be alien from a group that discriminates you from them. They will just push you closer to the people that you really want to be with.

I am saying screen names are great, and orginal ones are better, but I dont like the idea that people cant come into a server with their known screen name. I dont think I actually said to use real names, but as most of you know i am pretty open with my own.

Why not be something you can't be in real life? Online you are who you profess to be, and you can use that to remain unnoticed or part of a group you wouldn't normally be in. I say leave it up to people, it's not like anybody gets hurt when somebody uses an alias. Well, there was that case in tfc that RWS (I think) posted a link to.. but that was just a (really) bad decision on the part of the perp.

Sometimes, due to situations, contact is not what you want. To enjoy a game in peace and just expell bad energy can be all that you want. It's the same as going to another town to do shopping to avoid people that you know etc. In the Rico world, there aren't many servers so changing your name is the equivalent to that.

On CS... you just pick another server.

I can sort of see that being an issue, if you ask me if you have a server full of regular players that are getting along its great if you are feeling down. Tonight we had, wank, rUsh, Beastie, myself, grits, gwar, and png playing (i think that is everyone), no aliases, no problem players, just everyone getting along and haveing fun. I have been in servers where quite a few ppl are under an alias, i just dont feel the community as strongly, or the social aspect of it.

heh...i consider myself the strange old man who lives on the outskirts who comes into town for groceries. you could say that i'm on the cyber-fringe in a sense. i'm still trying to understand this online culture but i don't desire to become consumed by it either...i only wish to be consumed by understanding and love. i really can't relate to anyone here but, to my credit, i don't seek out clones. interesting people are everywhere...they are here, they are there...they all are all around. a community is wherever you end up....some people throw a party...instead...be the party.B)

personally, I use an alias for various reasons...sometimes I'll think of a name that cracks me up, so I'll use that. Sometimes, it's like Gemakk said, want to see how people play against me when they don't know it's me. :ph34r:Somtimes I like to come in under an alias and pretend to be a noob, wait until someone disrespects me, then whoop their ass just to be a bully. :angry:Sometimes, like Kermit said, I don't want to chat cause I'm grouchy or being anti social. -_- Sometimes if I see a bunch of old school regulars on, I'll use my old name TrOma so maybe they will recognize me ^_^

oh old names are good to, because of the recognitation, if anyone would remember killedinaction i would use that more. Wha and rUsh would remember because that was my CS name way back in the day. Used it a bit for rico but never had access to a computer consitently enough to play rico. If I had I would be a lot better

Too be honest in my experiances, whenever i feel anti-social the best way to over come that is by being social. I just get into a mood and playing with people i know and socializeing with them just helps.

Unfortunately, you can't apply the same rules to everyone. I know that sometimes when I'm in a non-social mood and just need to blow steam in a productive yet safe manor, I come on under an alias, and ignore everything in chat. That way I can just play and not have the hassle of certain people attempting to wind me up on a bad day.
