Hmm... ME has similar relations to STEAM, because people looked at ME, newbs took it and experienced people just went backwards to 98 SE...:)

Yes. Uninstall STEAM... copy any custom maps you might have. Uninstall HL (if you still have it present). Delete any \STEAM or \SIERRA\Half-LIfe or \SIERRA\C-Strike folders and then start from the beginning... don't forget to download that full 1.1.1.0 patch.

Good point, and yes I forgot to mention that... because I just assume that as part of what I do... because I do it automatically...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Steam
and possibly also
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Steam

If you have multiple users, you might need to delete it for each user, but I can't be arsed explaining how to do that here.

Windows ME/2K/XP all have what are known as restore points... Boot to safe mode and it'll restore any system critical files if you ask it to.
