It basically runs like this:
1. You apply for an interview for a support position.
2. If successful and you pass the interview, you are brought up to a trial helper position.
3. During this "trial" the other support staff basically vote if you should be a full helper, this vote occurs 2 or more weeks after the trial starts.
So basically, if I do good and the support staff think so too, I'll be promoted to a regular support helper.
A trial helper has basic powers, they are able to help in support but without any of the commands, like creating chanservs.
